Solar lights charge in the sun and switch on at dusk, with no wiring and no running costs. They're ideal for fences, side paths, garden beds and anywhere a power point is a long way off. Getting the most from solar
- Sun firstThe panel needs several hours of direct sun. Shady spots mean shorter run times.
- Separate panel optionsSome kits have a remote panel, so the light can sit in shade while the panel sits in the sun.
- Sensor modeSensor lights save charge by switching on only when someone walks past.
- WinterExpect shorter run times in winter, when days are short.
Questions we get asked
How long do solar lights stay on?
On a full charge, most run for 6 to 10 hours in constant mode, longer in sensor mode. Cloudy days reduce that.
Do solar lights work in winter?
Yes, with less run time. Placing the panel where it gets the most winter sun helps a lot.
Are solar lights bright enough for security?
Solar sensor lights work well for paths and side gates. For driveways or large areas, a wired security light is brighter.
