Say "heated towel rail" and most people picture a cold winter morning and a warm towel waiting after the shower. That's a lovely thing, but it's only half the story. The bigger benefit is that a heated towel rail dries your towels properly, every single day, in every season. And a bathroom full of damp towels is one of the quickest ways to a musty smell.
Why do bathroom towels stay damp?
A bathroom is a small, humid room. After a shower the air is full of moisture, and a towel hanging on a hook or a bar has little chance to dry before the next use. In humid weather it's even worse. A towel that stays damp can start to smell sour, and it adds to the moisture in the room, which is exactly what you don't want if you're trying to keep mould away.
"A warm towel is a nice bonus. A dry towel is the real reason to buy one."
What does a heated towel rail actually do?
It gently warms the bars so towels dry out between uses, rather than sitting damp for a day. That also means fresher towels, less washing, and a bathroom that feels less clammy. Many people also find it takes a bit of the chill out of the room on a cool morning, though it's not a replacement for a proper heater.
Is it worth having one in summer?
Yes, and this is the part that surprises people. Coastal and humid parts of the Hunter and Port Stephens can be muggy for months, and towels take a long time to dry. A heated towel rail takes the dampness out of them, even on a warm, still day. You can run it for a short time after a shower and leave it off the rest of the day.
How does it fit with the rest of the bathroom?
A towel rail works best as part of a team. Good ventilation is what actually clears moisture from the air, so pair it with one of our exhaust fans, or choose an exhaust fan with a light if you want both in one fitting. If you want a warm room on top of dry towels, our bathroom heaters do the heating job.
What should you check before you buy?
- Size. Measure the wall space and think about how many towels you need to hang.
- Finish. Chrome, black, brushed nickel and white are all popular. Match it to your tapware and fittings.
- Placement. Keep it near the shower or bath, where you'll reach for it.
- Power and installation. Some rails connect directly to 240V and others are designed for 12-volt installation, so check which you're buying and have a licensed electrician do the install.
Finish the room properly
If you're updating the bathroom, it's worth thinking about the whole space together. A heated rail, good ventilation and the right mirror and lighting make a bathroom that's comfortable and easy to look after. Have a look at our mirrors and our bathroom lighting while you're at it.
