One Downlight Isn't Enough for Your Bathroom, Here's What to Do Instead

Bathroom with layered lighting around the vanity mirror and soft ambient light

Look up in most bathrooms and you'll find the same thing: one downlight, sometimes two, sitting right above your head. It lights the room, technically. It also casts shadows under your eyes and chin, makes the mirror a poor place to shave or do your makeup, and gives the whole space the warmth of a hospital corridor. A good bathroom deserves better than that.

Why is a single downlight a problem in the bathroom?

A downlight directly overhead throws light straight down. That means your forehead and nose are lit while your eyes, cheeks and neck sit in shadow, which is the opposite of what you want at the mirror. It also does nothing for the mood. Bathrooms are where we start and finish the day, and one harsh light does neither well.

"The mirror needs light on your face, not on the top of your head."

What does layered bathroom lighting look like?

The same idea we use in living rooms works here too, just on a smaller scale. Think of three layers working together:

  • General light for the room itself, from a ceiling fitting or downlights, ideally on a dimmer.
  • Task light at the mirror, coming from the sides or from above and in front, so your face is lit evenly.
  • Soft accent light for the quiet moments, such as a glow under the vanity or around a mirror.

In a bathroom you can't use lamps the way you would in a lounge room, so the layers come from ceiling, wall and hidden lighting instead.

How do you light the mirror properly?

Wall lights on either side of the mirror are the classic answer, because they light your face from both sides and cut out shadows. If space is tight, a light above the mirror works, as long as it's not the only source. Our wall lights range has plenty of styles that suit a vanity, from simple and modern to something a bit more decorative.

What about a soft glow for the evening?

This is the layer most people skip, and it makes the biggest difference to how a bathroom feels. A strip of LED lighting tucked under a floating vanity or behind a mirror adds a gentle glow, so you can find your way at night without hitting the bright switch. Have a look at our LED strip lighting, and check the product details for suitable moisture ratings for where you plan to use it.

Does storage come into it?

It does, more than people expect. A mirrored cabinet with a built-in light solves two problems at once, giving you storage and even light at the mirror. If you're renovating or swapping out your mirror, our shaving cabinets are worth a look.

Don't forget colour temperature and dimming

Keep your bathroom lights in the same warm white range, so the layers feel like one scheme. Around 3000K suits most bathrooms, because it's warm but still clear enough for the mirror. If you can add a dimmer to the general light, do it. A bright setting for the morning rush and a low one for a late bath is a small change that makes the room feel far more considered.

A quick word on safety

Bathrooms have rules about where electrical products can go, and the right rating depends on how close a fitting is to water. Always check the IP rating on a product suits the spot, and have the work done by a licensed electrician.

Start with our wall lights, add some LED strip lighting, and look at our shaving cabinets if storage is on the list. While you're upgrading, our exhaust fans with lights and bathroom heaters can handle ventilation, warmth and general light in one fitting.
