The Bathroom Storage Upgrade Nobody Sees Until You Open the Mirror

Ask someone what they want in a new bathroom and you'll hear about tiles, tapware and a good shower. Almost nobody mentions the mirror cabinet. Yet it's the thing that decides whether your vanity top stays clear or turns into a pile of toothbrushes, razors and half-used moisturiser. If you're building or renovating, a recessed shaving cabinet is one of the smartest, quietest upgrades you can make.

What is a recessed shaving cabinet?

A recessed shaving cabinet is set into the wall, in the space between the studs, so the cabinet sits flush with the wall instead of sticking out into the room. A surface-mounted cabinet hangs on the front of the wall and projects out. Both give you a mirror and storage behind it, but a recessed one looks like part of the architecture rather than something added on later.

"The best bathroom storage is the kind you only notice when you open the door."

Why choose recessed over a standard mirror?

A plain mirror looks great and does nothing else. A cabinet gives you a place for everything you reach for every morning, tucked behind a mirror and out of sight. That matters even more in a small bathroom, where every bit of vanity top counts. When you can clear the clutter off the benchtop, the room feels bigger and easier to clean.

What are the benefits?

  • A cleaner look. The cabinet sits flush, which suits modern and minimal bathrooms where you want clean lines.
  • More usable space. Nothing sticks out, so you don't knock it while you're brushing your teeth or drying off.
  • Hidden storage. Everything stays behind the mirror and out of sight.
  • Light where you need it. Many cabinets include built-in LED lighting, which gives even light on your face at the mirror.

A cabinet with a built-in light also handles the task lighting at the mirror for you, which is one less fitting to plan around. If you want a soft evening glow as well, our LED strip lighting is an easy addition.

What should you check before you buy?

  • Wall depth. A recessed cabinet needs a cavity to sit in, so check the wall depth and what's behind it, such as plumbing or electrical.
  • Size. Match the cabinet width to your vanity so the two line up.
  • Lighting. If the cabinet has built-in LED lights, check how it's powered and where the power will come from.
  • Planning. It's far easier to build in at the framing stage than to cut into an existing wall, so decide early if you're renovating.

Who is it right for?

It's a great fit for anyone building new or doing a full bathroom reno, where the wall is open and the cabinet can be planned in from the start. It's also a smart choice for small bathrooms, ensuites and powder rooms. If you're only freshening up and the walls are staying as they are, a surface-mounted cabinet is the simpler option and still does the job well.
